The 7 Best Mt. Wrightson Hiking Trails

As one of the highest peaks in the Santa Rita Mountains near Tucson, AZ, Mt. Wrightson has a reputation for being one of the best places for an outdoor adventure. The jagged peaks of the tall mountain stand out starkly against the desert sky, while the surrounding greenery of the Coronado National Forest creates an oasis in an otherwise barren landscape.

For those yearning for a closer look at Mt. Wrightson and the stellar views from its peak, the many hiking trails that wind up the slopes are the best way to experience it for yourself. Join us as we uncover some of the best trails through the beauty of Mt. Wrightson.

1. Old Baldy Trail

  • Distance: 10.8 miles round trip (to summit)
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Elevation Gain: ~4,000 feet
  • Description: This is the most popular route to the summit of Mt. Wrightson. It provides a direct and steep path, passing through a variety of landscapes and vegetation. The trail offers sweeping views of southern Arizona, and once you reach the summit, you'll have panoramic views stretching into Mexico on clear days. It's a challenging hike, but one of the best in the area for experienced hikers.

2. Super Trail

  • Distance: 13.1 miles round trip (to summit)
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Elevation Gain: ~4,000 feet
  • Description: The Super Trail is an alternative route to the summit of Mt. Wrightson. It’s longer than Old Baldy but has a more gradual ascent, making it a little easier on the knees, though still strenuous. This trail is less shaded but offers plenty of great views along the way. Many hikers choose to combine this trail with Old Baldy for a loop hike.

3. Gardner Canyon Trail

  • Distance: 4.5 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Elevation Gain: ~800 feet
  • Description: Gardner Canyon Trail is a less difficult option compared to the summit trails that offers a pleasant hike through oak woodlands and meadows. This trail doesn't reach the summit but is a great choice for those looking for a more moderate hike while still enjoying the scenery of the Santa Rita Mountains.

4. Wrightson Picnic Area to Josephine Saddle

  • Distance: 6.1 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Elevation Gain: ~1,750 feet
  • Description: This hike takes you from the trailhead at Madera Canyon to Josephine Saddle, which is a popular stopping point on the way to Mt. Wrightson. It’s a great option for those who want a shorter, moderate hike without committing to the full summit. You’ll pass through beautiful pine and oak forests, with (you guessed it) great views as you climb.

5. Kent Springs Trail

  • Distance: 4.5 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Elevation Gain: ~1,200 feet
  • Description: Kent Springs Trail is another scenic route in Madera Canyon that offers moderate difficulty. This loop trail traverses through shady pine and oak forests, with some nice viewpoints along the way. It's great for a shorter hike with beautiful scenery.

6. Bog Springs Trail

  • Distance: 5.2 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Elevation Gain: ~1,000 feet
  • Description: This trail starts from the same area as the others in Madera Canyon. The Bog Springs Trail is known for its peaceful forested environment and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife. It’s a moderate hike and is perfect for a quieter, less crowded experience.

7: Madera Canyon Nature Trail

  • Distance: 2.2 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Elevation Gain: Minimal
  • Description: For those looking for an easy and accessible trail, the Madera Canyon Nature Trail is perfect. It offers a relaxed walk through the canyon, perfect for families, birdwatchers, and casual hikers. It’s a great way to experience the beauty of the area without the strenuous climbs.
