The star of the show here is Sycamore Canyon, a lush, narrow canyon that cuts through the harsh Arizona landscape. The water in this canyon flows year-round, nourishing the tall Arizona sycamores and wild cottonwoods that line the walls—definitely not your typical desert scenery.
On top of being a stunning spot for photos, this spot is a magnet for all sorts of plants and animals—especially birds. With over 160 bird species calling this place home, Sycamore Canyon is a birdwatching hotspot. There’s a chance to see everything from colorful vermilion flycatchers to rare trogons, which usually stick to tropical regions but make an exception for this awesome place.
The best way to experience Sycamore Canyon is via the Sycamore Canyon Trail. This trail (a.k.a. Trail #40) is about five miles round-trip and gives you a front-row view of everything that makes the canyon special. You’ll follow the creek, hop across a few water crossings, and maybe scramble over a rock or two. It’s all part of the fun! Along the way, take in the greenery, the trickling water, and—of course—the bird calls echoing through the canyon. This isn’t a trail for flip-flops, but anyone with a little hiking experience will love it.
And don’t just look up! The variety of plants here is impressive, with unique finds like orchids, cacti, and wildflowers making their homes among the sycamores and willows. Plus, the local wildlife includes everything from javelinas to the elusive coatimundi (Arizona’s version of a raccoon). It’s a place where every corner brings something new and unexpected.

If birdwatching is your thing, the Pajarita Wilderness should definitely be on your bucket list. During spring and fall, migratory birds pass through in droves, making this a seasonally-packed paradise for birdwatchers. Alongside year-round residents like gray hawks and colorful flycatchers, you’ll see all kinds of fascinating birds that make this place their pitstop.
Even if you’re not a birder, the variety of wildlife and plant life here makes it feel like you’re walking through a living nature documentary. The area boasts more than 660 plant species, making it one of the most ecologically rich spots in Arizona. It’s the perfect spot for nature photography, so don’t forget your camera!
Ready to hit the road? From Patagonia, take Arizona State Road 82 south for about 35 minutes. Once you hit Beyerville take a right onto South River Road. Follow that for another 15 minutes, take a left on Ruby Road, and keep going until you hit your destination. A high-clearance vehicle is handy here because the road can get a little rough, but the trip is well worth it!
Since this area is protected wilderness, help keep it beautiful by keeping the area clean. Remember, no motorized vehicles or bikes are allowed on the trails. Bring plenty of water, as it can get hot, and if you decide to drink from any of the natural water sources, be sure to purify it first.
The wilderness is close to the U.S.-Mexico border, so don’t be surprised if you see Border Patrol agents. They’re out there doing their thing—just be aware of your surroundings, and you’ll be good to go.
