Pre-Trip RV Maintenance Checklist

Being able to hop in your RV and hit the road to go on an adventure is always a wonderful feeling. But before you go, take the time necessary to ensure that your RV is in good working order. Doing this can lower RV maintenance costs, lengthen the life of your RV, and help prevent your trip from becoming a disaster.

Here is a short RV maintenance checklist that you can use before you head out on your next excursion.

Review RV Manuals

It may seem tedious, but reviewing the manuals for your RV is a great idea, especially if you are new to owning an RV.

If you don’t take the time to go over every part of the manuals, at least go over the sections on:

  • Basic operations
  • Warranties
  • Maintenance

Doing this can give specific information about maintaining your vehicle and any warranties you have.

Inside Your RV

Here are a few things you should do on the inside of your RV before you go.

Turn Off Water Pump and Propane-Fed Appliances

Before you travel, be sure to turn off your:

  • Furnace
  • Water pump
  • Refrigerator
  • Water heater
  • Pilot lights

Doing this helps to prevent hazardous leaks, such as propane and moisture, from affecting your health and damaging your vehicle.

Close and Secure Windows and Roof Vents

Not only does keeping your windows and vents closed while driving help prevent dust, dirt, and moisture from getting inside your vehicle, it also helps to prevent uneven pressure while driving, which can result in dangerous swaying and even blown out windows.

Secure Any Large Items and Trash Cans

The last thing you want when driving is to damage expensive items such as TVs and computers. You also don’t want to have trash rolling around either. Securing these items can help you keep peace of mind while on the road.

Outside Your RV

Here are a few things outside your RV that you should check on before traveling.

Check Lights

Ensure that all of your lights are working properly, including:

  • High beams
  • Turn signals
  • Fog lamps
  • Brake lights

If you have a tow vehicle, make sure its lights work as well.

Inspect Your Tires

Your tires are the foundation for your vehicle(s), so it’s important to make sure that they are in good condition. When the tires are cold, be sure to:

  • Check the tread and walls for damage or wear and tear
  • Check for uneven tread
  • Check tire pressure
  • Ensure that all lug nuts are tightened

Check Your Jacks

The environment can be harsh on vehicles, especially on your RV jacks. Look for things like:

  • Dents
  • Metal that is twisted or corroded
  • Loose bolts
  • Stripped threads

If your jacks are electric or hydraulic, be sure to check the manual for specific components to look out for.

Inspect Your Generator

Having a functioning generator is vital to a great RV trip.

Make sure that:

  • The generator runs properly
  • There are no signs of corrosion
  • There are no problems with wiring
  • The filters and fluids are changed, if needed.

Check Your Drain and Fill Hoses

A leaky hose can cause lots of issues down the road. Make sure that your hoses don’t have any cracks, holes, or breaks. You’d also do well to secure your valves/caps for your freshwater, gray water, and black water tanks.
