Guide to Elgin and Sonoita Wineries

The Sonoita region is one of three areas in the state that is known for its wineries. In fact, the Sonoita-Elgin area was one of the first regions in the U.S. to be designated as an American Viticultural Area, an official appellation that is a big deal in the world of winemaking.

We can’t mention every one of the dozens of wineries in this region of Southern Arizona in this article, but we’ve listed a few of the more popular wineries to help you get an idea of what to expect.

Sonoita Vineyards

  • Address: 290 Elgin Canelo RD, Elgin, AZ
  • Hours: Wed - Mon: 10 AM - 4 PM; Closed Tues

One can’t talk about Elgin, AZ wineries without mentioning Sonoita Wineries, the oldest commercial vineyard and winery in Arizona. The original founder, Dr. Gordon Dutt, is the person that proved making excellent wines was possible in Southeast Arizona due to the rich terra rossa soil.

The winery and vineyard sits among green rolling hills, with excellent views of the surrounding countryside. The tasting room inside the estate is one of the largest in the area.  The wines they produce speak for themselves, having won numerous awards and even been chosen for a Presidential Inauguration Gala.

Arizona Hops and Vines

  • Address: 3450 AZ-82, Sonoita, AZ
  • Hours: Sun - Thurs: 11 AM - 4 PM; Fri - Sat: 11 AM - 6 PM

Arizona Hops and Vines is easily one of the most eccentric Sonoita wineries. This small, family owned winery cultivates a casual environment where anyone can come and relax while enjoying great wine.

Their wines also have a tendency to be unorthodox, from their labels to their flavor profiles. During tastings, the wines are paired with a variety of cheetos, adding to the laid back atmosphere. The owners are well known for their cheery demeanor and for their good conversation skills.

Deep Sky Vineyard

  • Address: 124 Elgin Rd, Elgin, AZ
  • Hours: Wed - Sun: 11 AM - 5 PM; Closed Mon - Tues

Deep Sky Vineyard uses a high tech approach to managing their vineyard, constantly monitoring every aspect of their vines and soil which results in quality wine and allows them to be more environmentally friendly. While they are specifically known for their quality Malbec grapes, they offer a wide range of wines.

Their tasting room has a spacious feel, with a handcrafted rustic bar and beautiful artwork on the walls. They also have a wrap around bar that allows you to enjoy mountain views during your tasting.

Don Cabezas Wineworks

  • Address: 3248 AZ-82, Sonoita, AZ
  • Hours: Weds - Mon: 11 AM - 5 PM; Closed Tues

If tasting wine while experiencing unique, homemade pizza sounds like a great time to you, then you should visit Don Cabezas Wineworks.

The winery is run by a small family of wineworks who are dedicated to providing great tasting wine and a memorable experience. The tasting room has an easygoing atmosphere, complete with the wonderful service provided by the staff. There is plenty of room outdoors as well with a back patio and a screened in porch. The restaurant onsite, Pronghorn Pizza, is also well known in the area for their pizza and their other snack items such as smoked salmon and cheese charcuterie boards.
